Run to Wal Mart (can’t believe I wrote that), and buy the double CD/DVD of Adele’s performance at Royal Albert Hall, or whatever that fancy venue is called, and you will not regret it. She’s better than you could ever think she is listening to the album. I got sucked in by having to play her album in my car whenever Lilly, 3, got in it with me. We’d drive around listening to Adele, and you should too, because it’s good for your emotional well being.

How I made this happen…

I went to work. Jen ran them around all day. I got home and started watching the end of the first half of the Rose Bowl. They complained. I had them jump on couch cushions. They got bored with that. We put on Wild Kratts (See earlier post). It ended. They fell over on the couch. I get to finish the Rose Bowl.

Boom. Done. Next parenthood issue.

Why are my children so hooked on Wild Kratts, the tv show on PBS? It’s not the switch between real-life tape and animation. It’s not even the focus on animals; I can’t get them to watch National Geographic to save my life. It’s the characters, plain and simple. Each one is different. There are boys and girls, different colors, and solid writing. In fact, if you want to create a children’s tv program, just follow that template: good characters, boys and girls, bright colors, good writing—and boom, done. You’ve got a show.

Maybe I need to get into hockey. The games are too long, though....

What happens:

The kids sometimes run away from me.

I can sometimes break through by playing fake monster game—they enjoy that.

But this whole thing where the kids can’t stand their dad.

It hurts. I can write it down. It does. It’s not the most special feeling I’ve ever had.

Not sure anyone told me about this before becoming a dad.

Explains a whole lot about how insecure my own dad would get at times—all pity partied out and harsh back to us as kids, hoping that by speaking hard to us, we’d like him more.

Ah, there’s the revelation: talk to kids like you’re coaxing a tiny animal into your truck.

It’s worth “liking” The New Yorker’s fb page so you can read for free the Franzen essay on novels and his friend David Foster Wallace. A good read. I resisted “Freedom” but it’s worth reading, too. He’s really good.

It was an interesting morning, fruitful. But it lacked the intensity that you and I generate together, the sparks that we get one-on-one. We just gotta figure out a way to work around your schedule. Could we work afternoons? Two to four? Three to five? Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday?
